| Premier Iemma Running Fom Budget Scrutiny |
|
NSW Liberal Leader and Shadow Treasurer Peter Debnam said today Premier Iemma was running from scrutiny of his crisis Budget and it's important for the people of NSW that Parliament sit an extra week after the Budget. "I've again written to Premier Iemma today reminding him of my letter of 13 April 2006 seeking an extra sitting week after the Budget," Mr Debnam said. "Premier Iemma does not want scrutiny of his budget crisis - nor the Budget he delivers which will undoubtedly include rubbery figures," he said. "With the
Iemma Labor Government in turmoil, the Premier has cancelled three Question
Times this month which reduces scrutiny of all the Government's problems in
every portfolio," he said.
"Parliament
will also close for the 12-week winter recess just 48 hours after the Budget is
delivered.
"The stricken NSW economy necessitates Parliament's careful examination of the Budget and 48 hours is a contemptible amount of time for such consideration. "This is a
betrayal of the community and the Parliament and shows how arrogant and out of
touch the Labor Government has become.
"Premier Iemma has failed to respond to my original letter and now abolished the sitting week preceding the Budget. "Members of Parliament need time to debate the Budget giving it the scrutiny it deserves and to represent their electorates' concerns," Mr Debnam said.
