INFRASTRUCTURE DEBT HIGHLIGHTS BUDGET CRISIS
NSW Liberal Leader and Shadow Treasurer Peter Debnam said today Labor's Infrastructure Strategy simply highlights the state's budget crisis and leaves most questions about infrastructure unanswered.

"The sales brochure released today is a long way from transparency and accountability. It's a massive promise from a panicked Government which has never delivered," Mr Debnam said.

"Morris Iemma is continuing Bob Carr's strategy of spin and rubbery figures," he said.

"The Labor Government raked in record tax revenues over the last decade but didn't invest it in infrastructure. Over a number of years they pulled in more than $8 billion in above budget revenue – they didn't invest it; they just blew it.

"Now NSW Labor is borrowing a large amount of debt and explaining it as the only way infrastructure can be delivered.

"You have to ask what were they planning to use to deliver infrastructure last week?

"In recent years, NSW residents have been asking "Where's all the money gone?"

"From today, NSW residents will also be asking 'What is Labor actually going to do with the record borrowings?' – because it is not apparent in today's documents.

"The Labor Government plans to borrow another $5.4 billion in the next twelve months for pre-election promises.

"The documents released today are rubbery at best and fail to provide the transparency and accountability NSW needs in infrastructure planning and delivery.

"The announcement today does not include any significant new projects. It does not include any plan on how the money will be spent. And it does not include any infrastructure register.

"Labor's economic vandalism over the last twelve years has driven the budget into crisis and the economy into the doldrums.

"Despite a record tax take, nearly $8 billion of windfall gains over and above budget, and the highest taxes in the country, the Iemma Labor Government is still borrowing and the budget is in crisis.

"No-where in this document does it say what Premier Iemma plans to do with his billion-dollar sale of the iconic Snowy Hydro Scheme," Mr Debnam said.
