NSW Liberal Leader Peter Debnam today used 'Walk to School Day' to recommit a Liberal/Nationals Coalition Government to installing flashing lights at 40km/h school zones across New South Wales. Flashing lights at school zones are a practical way to save childrens lives, Mr Debnam said. Flashing lights will leave motorists in no doubt they are travelling through a school zone and have a responsibility to ensure they stick to the 40km/h limit and exercise additional caution," he said. Drivers travelling through an unfamiliar area could be totally unaware they are entering a school zone, be ignorant of the fact that it is a school day or unfamiliar with the operation times of these zones. Such circumstances increase the risk of injury or fatality to school children walking to school. The safety of our children and awareness of the operation of 40km/h school zones should not be left to chance. There is no reason why flashing lights should not be installed at school zones across the state as a matter of priority. Labor and its succession of Roads Ministers have spent three years conducting a trial. A Liberal/Nationals Coalition Government will get on with job. I will also look at obtaining sponsorship to partly fund the cost of the programme. Many local businesses have indicated to me they would be prepared to put up the cost of the flashing lights and installation to support the safety of their schoolchildren. The installation of flashing lights at schools across the state is a commonsense approach to keeping our children safe, Mr Debnam said. MEDIA: Brad Burden 9230 2270 or 0401 672 145 |
