30th January 2007 - Parramatta

Today I started off the morning at Central Station with Shadow Minister for Transport Gladys Berejiklian, our MPs and candidates to announce our “If it’s late – it’s late” transport policy.  After twelve years of Labor, CityRail has been ignored and commuters are suffering. Under Labor, on-time running has been woeful and their only answer has been to cut services and change the definition of a late running train.

The first step to fixing something is to admit you have a problem in the first place. As I move around the state commuters know that our transport system is in a mess – they have to live with it every day.

After twelve years of Labor if your train is four minutes and fifty-nine seconds late, under their definition it’s not late. For country trains it’s even worse. A Countrylink train can be almost ten minutes late, and still get classed as being on-time. But even Labor couldn’t class Liberal Candidate for The Entrance Phil Walker’s train as being on-time. His train from the Central Coast was a full 28 minutes late this morning!

Under a Debnam Liberal Government – if it’s late – it’s late. We’re going to scrap the technicalities of late running trains because we want to know where the problems are on the rail network so that we can fix them. While Labor fiddles with the figures and tries to spin their way out of trouble, we’re putting up our hands and taking on the responsibility to fix our late-running trains.

From Central I hopped on a train with our Candidate for Parramatta John Chedid, and started our journey to Wentworthville.  While on the train one woman from Winston Hills stopped me to say how outrageous the Labor Party’s manipulation of the land tax system was against small investors like her.

We arrived at Wentworthville and visited the Wentworthville Police Station to highlight how our Policing policy will have a positive impact on the people of Western Sydney. Every time John knocks on a door he hears another story about how Labor’s ‘softly-softly’ approach to law and order is hurting the people of Parramatta.

Before every election Labor beefs up Police numbers only to let them fall straight after the poll. That’s what happened here in the seat of Parramatta. The Parramatta LAC has lost 29 officers and Holroyd LAC has lost 19 officers from their 2003 highs. We need to keep Police numbers at the same level all the time - not slash numbers after each election. Under Labor policing levels have been tied to electoral cycles and our community has had enough.

Our Police are doing a great job, but they’re just not getting the back-up they need from the State Government. That’s why we’re putting 1100 more Police on the street to give our Police the support they need to keep our community safe.  As I walked around Wentworthville visiting local shopkeepers, they all had a story to tell about how they’d been affected by crime. While Morris Iemma thinks that our Police levels are adequate, local businesses in Wentworthville welcomed our plan to put 1100 more Police on the beat.

As I travel around NSW there is no shortage of major concerns that people have with this State Government. Whether it’s the economy, water, adequate policing, health, public transport or infrastructure, Labor throw up their arms and say, “it’s just too difficult.”

Well it isn’t. We can change things in NSW. The only way to fix a problem is to recognise that you have one in the first place. Under Labor all we get is denial and excuses. A Debnam Government in NSW won’t be afraid to acknowledge there are problems and I’m putting my hand up to fix them. It’s this change of attitude we need to get NSW Back in Front.

As a small business owner in the area, I have been a victim of Labor's failure to resource our hardworking local cops. All too often I come to work and put up with petty criminals and stealing things. I have either been the victim of a graffiti attack or one of the other local shops has been tagged by the local thugs.

For too long we have heard empty promises from Labor that they will put more Police on the streets and fix the ongoing problems we have with young thugs in the area.

Their empty promises don't wash with us any more and I believe it is a time for change.

I don't want to be told that there are more Police by another politician. I want to be able to look over at Wentworthville Police Station and see for myself there are more Police keeping our businesses safe from thugs.

That is why I will be voting for a change at the next State election. I am sick and tired of Labor’s promises and want to see a change of Government.

If Peter Debnam and a NSW Liberal/Nationals Government are going to put more police on our streets and keep our community safe then the Liberals have my vote at the next election.
