NSW Opposition Leader Peter Debnam today announced the NSW Liberal/Nationals plan to clean up Sydney Harbour and the Parramatta River.

"Labor has neglected the world's greatest waterway to the point that it is no longer safe to fish in most of Sydney Harbour," Mr Debnam said.

"It is an international disgrace and I will take action to fix it," he said.

"This is a toxic clean-up to help the local environment, but it's also about lifestyle and getting NSW back in front," he said.

"I want parents and grandparents to be able to take their children fishing in Sydney Harbour and the Parramatta River.

"This toxic clean-up should have been done decades ago. Labor should never have allowed it to get the point where fishing is banned in parts of Sydney Harbour and Parramatta River.

"It's a serious health risk. As both Health Minister and Premier, Morris Iemma has failed to address this issue," Mr Debnam said.

The NSW Liberal/Nationals harbour and river rescue plan will:

• Commit an additional $15 million to clean up Homebush Bay and remove all dioxin hotspots to make it safe to fish again in Sydney Harbour and the Parramatta River;

• Commit $500,000 to carry out an assessment of environmental risks at the Camellia industrial site. This will identify the extent of decontamination and rehabilitation work required;

• Fast track the remediation of Kendall Bay;

• Commit $2 million to install stormwater filtration on the Hawthorn and Dobroyd Canals that lead into Iron Cove to stop heavy metals, organic chlorines and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons passing through the canals into the bays.  We will also install stormwater filtration on the canals that lead into Canada Bay and Exile Bay to stop heavy metals, organic chlorines and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons passing through the canals into the bays.  This will end the flow of pollutants into Iron Cove and into Canada Bay and Exile Bay, which form part of Hen and Chicken Bay; and,

• Allocate a further $2.5 million for additional remediation and clean-up work along the Parramatta River as required.
