Iemma-Costa Labor Adopt One Part Of NSW Lib/Nat P-Plate Policy – Now Adopt The Rest

NSW Liberal Leader Peter Debnam said today now the Iemma-Costa Labor Government has adopted one plank of the NSW Liberal/Nationals P-Plate policy, it should get on adopt the rest.

"Shadow Minister for Roads Andrew Stoner and I have been calling on the Iemma-Costa Labor Government to make driver education compulsory for senior school students for years," Mr Debnam said.

"To roll out the driver education to only a few select schools is not good enough, but at least it's a start and Iemma-Costa Labor should now adopt the rest of our policy," he said.

"After 12 years of Iemma-Costa Labor's excuses, it's time to act."

The NSW Liberal/Nationals plan to cut P-Plate driver deaths includes:

Upgrading road infrastructure;

  • Introducing compulsory driver education for senior school students;
  • Introducing a graphic advertising campaign targeting young drivers;
  • Introducing incentives to undertake enhanced driving courses; and
  • Increasing police highway patrols.

"The Iemma-Costa Labor Government should also confiscate the cars of drivers caught speeding by 45 km/h or over to send a strong message to drivers of all ages that speeding will not be tolerated.

"P-Plate driver fatalities in NSW are up 74% on the same time last year," Mr Debnam said.
