Labor's Bureaucrats Put it on Plastic
Thursday, 24 August 2006

NSW Liberal Leader and Shadow Treasurer Peter Debnam said today it's concerning so many bureaucrats have access to tens of millions of taxpayers' money on credit cards.

Freedom of Information documents obtained by the NSW Liberal/Nationals show there have been at least five cases of credit card fraud by Government bureaucrats.

The documents also show there are 7,402 credit cards with credit limits totalling up to $27.3 million.

There are 934 RTA bureaucrats with credit cards with a credit limit worth $6.5 million, including 19 cardholders with a credit limit of $50,000 each.

In the Premier's Department there are 9 bureaucrats with card limits of $50,000.

"It's a concern so many bureaucrats have access to so much taxpayers' money on credit cards and I want the Government to come clean on actual usage of these credit cards," Mr Debnam said.

"We need to rein in NSW's out of control bureaucracy and bring an end to Labor's waste and mismanagement," he said.

"The Government needs to come clean and explain why so many bureaucrats have so many credit cards with exorbitant taxpayer-funded credit limits.

"Morris Iemma, Michael Costa, John Della Bosca and Joe Tripodi have been failures managing the state's finances, as have their Labor colleagues, Carl Scully, Eddie Obeid and Frank Sartor," Mr Debnam said.

"NSW deserves higher standards, better services and balanced budgets," he said.
