Morris Iemma Must Cancel Greens/Labor Deal On Drugs: Debnam

NSW Opposition Leader Peter Debnam today slammed the Greens Leader Lee Rhiannon for her shocking admission on Sydney radio that the Greens support full decriminalisation of all drug use in NSW.

“Any Member of Parliament who advocates wholesale decriminalisation of drug use, including ice, heroin and ecstasy, should take a good hard look at themselves, do the community a favour, and resign,” Mr Debnam said.

“Labor and the Greens have done a deal at this election for preferences. In the light of Ms Rhiannon’s admission today, Morris Iemma must reveal the contents of his deal and cancel it,” he said.

“It’s time for Morris Iemma and Labor to wake up and realise that protecting families from drugs is more important than securing preferences from the Greens.

“It’s not good enough for Morris Iemma just to commentate. He must take action by following through and cancelling the deal, anything less is a joke.

“Will Morris Iemma do what’s right for families and the community? Or will Morris Iemma do what the Labor bosses who control him, tell him to do.”

“Morris Iemma’s position on preferencing the Greens is a test of his leadership.

“Morris Iemma must cancel all preferences to the Greens in both the Upper and Lower House if he expects to have any credibility with families and the community when it comes to enforcing and prosecuting drug laws.

“Labor’s preference deal is an endorsement of the Greens position on drug decriminalisation. Our community cannot tolerate a soft attitude on drugs.

“You cannot be serious about supporting families and young people and endorse drug use decriminalisation by preferencing the Greens.

“You cannot be serious about mental health and endorse decriminalisation of drug use by preferencing the Greens.

“You cannot be serious about reducing crime, if you are going to endorse decriminalisation of drug use by preferencing the Greens.

“Already we have seen how Labor has been soft on cautions and prosecutions for drug use amongst young people. In return for preferences in key marginal seats, the Greens will take Labor even further down their softly-softly path on drugs.

“The Liberal and National Parties cannot support the Greens policies and will not support the Greens with preferences, but Labor is.

“There is a good reason why the Greens say they will never preference the Liberal Party. And that is because we will never support their reckless policies for drug use that run counter to the values that we believe create stronger communities. But by preferencing the Greens, Labor is.

“The Liberal Party will never support decriminalisation of drugs, and no party should support ANY party that does.

“The Liberal Party’s position on drug decriminalisation and the Greens is clear. NO preferences, NO deal. Morris Iemma has a lot of explaining to do.

“Morris Iemma cannot allow his ‘whatever it takes’ attitude to politics to extend to putting young people and families at risk by supporting drug decriminalisation through Labor’s endorsement of the Greens at this election.

“Morris Iemma must repudiate Labor’s deal with the Greens today, no ifs no buts, or be held responsible for it.”
