| Debnam To Establish HMAS Voyager Memorial |
|
NSW Opposition Leader Peter Debnam today announced a NSW Liberal/Nationals Government would establish a HMAS Voyager memorial near the Australian National Maritime Museum in the Darling Harbour precinct. Today marks the 43rd anniversary of sinking HMAS Voyager, the worst peace-time naval disaster in Australias history, Mr Debnam said. The disaster claimed the lives of 82 of the 293 men when HMAS Melbourne and HMAS Voyager collided, he said. We should ensure the 81 naval personnel and one civilian that lost their lives in this tragedy are always remembered. In order to properly recognise the great sacrifice of those that died in the tragedy I will establish a memorial in Sydney to commemorate the HMAS Voyager disaster. The final location of the HMAS Voyager memorial will be determined in consultation with the survivors of the tragedy, the President of the Naval Association Les Dwyer and the President of the RSL Don Rowe. The memorial will allow all NSW residents to remember the great sacrifice members of the defence force make for their country, both in times of peace and war. As a naval officer for nine years I understand the immense sacrifices that members of the defence force make for their country. I am very proud to have served in the navy, under the Australian flag for nine years. As Premier I would ensure all those that lost their life in the HMAS Voyager disaster are properly recognised and remembered. The HMAS Voyager memorial that I will establish as Premier will help ensure the 82 lives that were tragically lost on 10 February 1964 are never forgotten, Mr Debnam concluded. |
