The importance of family

Peter Debnam's Blog - Thursday, 8th March 2007

Firstly, let me join the Prime Minister and Premier in conveying my sincerest condolences to the victims and families of those who lost their lives and were injured in the tragic plane crash in Indonesia yesterday. These events always come as a great shock.

There are many difficult days ahead and I commend all those involved in providing support and assistance to the victims and their families.

Today I would like to talk about fixing NSW to improve the way of life for families in this state. The Liberal/Nationals policies, are all about providing a better way of life for families in NSW.

Whether it’s because families are spending longer in their car or on the train getting to and from work, whether it’s higher fees or inability to access preschool education, or simply struggling to pay the rent or buy a home. These are the issues that families raise with me as I move around the state.

But Labor has stopped listening to families about these issues and are caught in a cycle of denial. And when you can’t admit you have a problem, how can you hope to fix it.

We will make sure that we follow through to make sure our policies do the job for families, by continuing to listen and to be accountable to families.

That’s why we’ll establish a Special Premier’s Families Advisory Panel, and introduce an Annual Families Report Card as part of the budget process to consider and respond to the impact of government policies on NSW families. Our Annual Families Report Card will examine the impact of government policies on:

  • Family time and relationships;

  • Affordable cost of living;

  • Family health and wellbeing;

  • Support and protection for families in crisis;

  • Safety and security for family life;

  • Providing the best possible start in life;

  • Opportunities for families to get ahead;

  • Facilities for growing families and communities;

  • Access to services for rural and regional families; and,

  • Sustainability for future generations;

We need to make sure that every taxpayer dollar does its job to support families in this state.

As this campaign goes on we are seeing Morris Iemma and Labor become increasingly cocky.

Just imagine how cocky he will be along with Michael Costa, Joe Tripodi and Frank Sartor if re-elected.  Families in NSW will just not get a look in.

So on March 24, don’t reward Labor. Vote to fix NSW.

Regards,
