Say no to drugs, Morris

Peter Debnam's Blog - Thursday, 15th March 2007

At 5.00pm tomorrow afternoon Morris Iemma must advise the Electoral authorities whether he will preference the Greens at this election, despite the Greens call to decriminalize ICE and all other drugs in NSW.

Yesterday Morris Iemma said ‘nobody should have anything to do with’ the Green’s policy to decriminalise drug use, include ICE, heroin and ecstasy. Yet, Morris Iemma has the hypocrisy to give the Greens his direct endorsement at the election on March 24, by giving them his preferences, that could see more Green MPs elected to Parliament, and even control the balance of power in NSW.

When asked to withdraw his support for the Greens, he refuses.  By contrast I have ruled out giving preferences to the Greens in every seat in the state - upper house and lower house.

It’s time for Morris Iemma and Labor to wake up and realise that protecting families from drugs is more important than securing preferences from the Greens.

It’s not good enough for Morris Iemma just to commentate on this issue. He must take action by following through and canceling his deal with the Greens. Anything less is bare faced hypocrisy.

The question is ‘will Morris Iemma do what’s right for families and the community? Or will Morris Iemma do what the Labor bosses who control him, tell him to do’.

Morris Iemma’s position on preferencing the Greens is a test of his leadership.

Morris Iemma must cancel all preferences to the Greens in both the Upper and Lower House if he expects to have any credibility with families and the community when it comes to enforcing and prosecuting drug laws.

Labor’s preference deal is an endorsement of the Greens position on drug decriminalisation. Our community cannot tolerate a soft attitude on drugs.

You cannot be serious about supporting families and young people and endorse drug use decriminalisation by preferencing the Greens.

Already we have seen how Labor has been soft on cautions and prosecutions for drug use amongst young people. In return for preferences in key marginal seats, the Greens will take Labor even further down their softly-softly path on drugs.

The Liberal and National Parties dpo not support the Greens policies and will not support the Greens with preferences, but Labor is.

Morris Iemma cannot allow his ‘whatever it takes’ attitude to politics to extend to putting young people and families at risk by supporting drug decriminalisation through Labor’s endorsement of the Greens at this election.

Morris Iemma must cancel Labor’s deal with the Greens today, no ifs no buts, or be held responsible for it.
