A chance to fix NSW

Peter Debnam's Blog - Thursday, 22nd March 2007

On Saturday, I’m asking the people of NSW for the chance to fix NSW.

Because after twelve years of Labor, NSW needs fixing.

For twelve years, Labor has shown they can’t fix NSW.

Labor has said at this election there is more to be done. But, as their record shows they never do it. And they never will.

We need to fix NSW NOW!

Labor’s costing show that Morris Iemma believes we don’t have to do anything for at least three years, because that is when the bulk of Labor’s election promises kick in, in three years time

Our detailed costings will show that all our commitments are fully funded, fully costed and independently verified by KPMG – the same firm that Labor had to review their costings in 1995.

You will also see that the savings we will make, will more than match our spending commitments. In other words, we will not spend more than we can afford.

But Labor has made no attempt at savings at all. That’s right, in a $43 billion annual budget, Labor cannot save a cent.

Without savings, Labor cannot pay for its promises, without raising taxes or driving the state further into deficit.

Morris Iemma claims he will not raise taxes. This is a lie. But 12 years ago Bob Carr and Labor pledged to do the same thing. And we all know how that turned out.

Labor always sees more tax as the solution to every problem.

After the experience of Labor’s vendor tax, clubs tax and abolishing the land tax threshold, we all know that Labor just can’t be believed on new taxes.

And when it comes to deficits, it is Morris Iemma and Michael Costa who have all the form - $500 million worth of form.

In the last eighteen months, Morris Iemma and Michael Costa have put the State Budget into deficit, a $500 million deficit .. no one else, … Morris Iemma and Michael Costa did it all on their own.

The reason Labor put this state into deficit is that they can’t control their spending.

Since the last election, State Government revenue increased by almost 20% - almost twice as fast as inflation. Yet Government spending has grown by an even faster rate – almost 27%.

Next year, Labor say they will increase spending by just 1.9%. This is simply not believable. Because in each of the last five years Labor has increased spending, on average, by more than 6%.

Don’t believe Labor’s promises, believe their record, their 12 year record.
